No matter how you splice it, WordPress hosted on your own server is the way to go nowadays. Mainly every major blog you read is using it.

We are currently working on creating a Wordpress blog that's hosted on our server. The blog's aim will be information sharing and to announce any specials we have. We've received a lot of feedback from our customers asking for us to have a blog. I think it will also help us to maintain our share of the space in the very busy auto warranty industry.

The main reason car ads and dealer ads in particular get flagged is because misguided people insist on putting lots of unrelated keywords in them. You've seen it. 16 lines of gray text words at the bottom of the page, sometimes for avoiding the craigslist auto overpost prevention, and some to subvert the craigslist search.

If someone is looking for a ford explorer and they find all your toyotas because you have ford explorer in keywords, you will get flagged 25x as much as you would without those keywords.

Why? Those other people would never see your ads. So just forget the brilliant idea of putting unrelated keywords. Personally I don't think it's helpful putting *any* keywords in craigslist ads. People aren't stupid. They know how to search and they recognize bogus results.

Avoid *being* the bogus results and you won't be flagged.

The "ownership" issue & the credibility issue...2 biggest reasons I'd recommend the self-hosted solution.

For someone just starting out, the other solutions are a great way to test the waters & build your blogging style.

@Kevin - Of all the other choices, I'm a fan of Squarespace - easy platform, plus they have a nice iPhone app. now.

@Paul - look forward to seeing the guide.

Someone else can. And at that point they can post whatever they choose.. Say Twitter.. Even if your not going to use it. Sign up put up a post to your site and be done. Not what I recommend for use but at least you wont be dupped.. I would suggest the same for vox and the bloggers.. Why not have them? But do not make them your only..

If you are going to have them use them. The problem you have then though is you are creating your own competition in venues that may serve your competitors or oems ads. Not so with blogger but absolutely with Vox, wordpress.com and many of the other free services.

I do believe and agree that one should have there own blog that they own for many reasons.. But I also would say to have some of the free sites as well. A rule of thumb I have followed for this is if you do not own/occupy it... Just my opinion...

Comment on What Affect Will Google Caffeine Have on Automotive SEO? by Mike Annable

Regarding the Google Caffeine Update, I think Google is still scrambling to figure out how to tie social networking links with this.

The problem first started when the nofollow tag was introduced. For example, links from a Facebook or Twitter homepage are nofollow, so we know they won't pass pagerank.

Another factor is redirects, like Faceook Posts and Twitter Tweets. If you use a bit.ly link it's obviously a redirect, but will that pass along any relevance?

We have a twitter app that we developed, and dealers that use it get an auto tweet sent out as each vehicle is added to their inventory. Our url is on each tweet from all of the dealers.

Keep in mind, this is a simple site we recently launched. There's barely any links pointing to it yet it is killing it in the serps. It's mind boggling to me, so I can't help to think it's coming from nofollow links from Twitter, or perhaps the Facebook Redirects.

I just want to add that this is a great blog, and I pass it along to any of my clients.

Paul, I think I just gave you a new blog topic! You seem savvy, so I would love to see your take on it.

You can remove this link before approving if you'd like, but I just want to show you an example of a dealer using our Twitter app: twitter.com/usedcarsorlando
